A Doorbell Without a Subscription
01

The Problem

The video doorbell promises simple awareness: who is at the door, and what happened to the package. The category's business model complicated that promise — core features like recorded history increasingly sit behind monthly fees that outrun the hardware cost within two years.

The research question was not 'which doorbell is best' but 'which architecture respects the buyer': can footage live in the home, under the owner's control, without a meter running?

02

The Research

We mapped the subscription terms of the major platforms, reviewed privacy policies on footage handling, and compared owner reports on local-storage reliability. The pattern was stark: cloud-first doorbells gate recording history, while a minority of designs store footage on a home base station with no required fee.

A secondary finding concerned detection quality. Package theft reports showed that a single forward camera misses the doorstep itself — the blind spot is exactly where parcels land. Dual-camera designs covering both visitor and doorstep addressed the actual failure mode.

What Matters

  1. 01

    Local-first recording

Footage stored in the home, viewable without a subscription, with cloud as an option rather than a toll.

  2. 02

    Doorstep coverage

A second downward camera or equivalent field of view where packages actually rest.

  3. 03

    Detection without noise

Person and package detection that filters passing traffic, or the alerts train you to ignore them.

  4. 04

    Power flexibility

Battery for renters, wired trickle for owners — without buying different models.

04

Solution Profile

Written before any product was considered — this is what a useful solution must do.

Must have

  • On-device or home-base local storage with no required subscription
  • Dual-view coverage of visitor and doorstep
  • On-device person and package detection
  • Battery and wired power options in one unit
  • Clear data-handling policy for any optional cloud features

Closest Match Partial match

Eufy · via Amazon

Closest match to the profile: dual cameras covering visitor and doorstep, local storage via HomeBase with no required fee, and battery-or-wired flexibility. Partial because the HomeBase hub adds upfront cost and app polish trails the largest cloud platforms.

Alternatives considered

We considered these too, and here is why the Finding arrived where it did.

  • Ring Video Doorbell (wired) Ring

Recording history gated behind a required subscription.

  • Google Nest Doorbell (battery) Google

Cloud-first storage and event-history limits without a subscription.

06

Why It Fits

  • Local storage architecture keeps recording history free of monthly fees
  • The second downward camera closes the package blind spot the research identified
  • On-device detection filters routine street motion without cloud processing
  • One model serves both renters (battery) and owners (wired trickle charge)
07

Limitations

No match is perfect. These are the trade-offs our research surfaced.

  • The HomeBase hub adds upfront cost and one more device to place
  • App polish trails the largest cloud platforms
  • Optional cloud backup exists but is limited compared with subscription-first rivals
